Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!!!
This seems like the first Christmas in ages that I got to party ON THE DAY! Usually we perform for old folks homes or orphanges or at hotels, then we celebrate Christmas AFTER the 25th. It feels RIGHT to celebrate it on the day...however, it feels like Christmas is shorter. Ha! I still don't want to take down the Christmas decorations till the year is over.

Well, here's what we did for Christmas.
Morning time was filled with cuddles and kisses. SKIN to SKIN time with Mommy, while I thanked God for giving me such a sweet and precious little Gemini boy this year. Last Christmas Boobins was a 3 month old fetus in my tummy. :) Now he's a big/skinny 6 month old boy. :)

After cuddles, I dressed Boobins in his Christmas vest and walked around giving Christmas Cheers to everyone we met. Until he stopped giving cheer, and instead giving off the fumes of something that needed changing. (After feeding him solids, the smell of doodoo instantly changed! Beware my friend mothers! The smell only gets worse!)

Then the afternoon came and I started wrapping presents and writing Christmas notes for everyone here. :) There's something about giving presents to people. I love it! I enjoy watching people's faces light up and become encouraged with the simpliest gifts. It's not about the present itself, it's usually the thought that counts. :) So... this year Josh and I gave presents to 39 people, plus my family-6. WHEW!!! I feel good!!! :) You should have seen me in my room in the middle of the floor wrapping presents, while Brian sat next to me ripping up paper, grabbing ribbons, playing with presents, and all the rest. So, some of our wrapping was a bit wrinkled, and some toys broken (JK), but it was fun!
We brought all our presents to dinner to pass out. Sadly I don't have any photos of our big bag and two big baskets of presents.
Anyway, I had a wonderful Christmas! Food and fellowship was great. Took some Christmas photos, something I was really looking forward to doing.

There were 4 other tables decorated as below.

Mary and Shun were the cooks! Thanks again Mary for the awesome dinner! I really loved the salad and PIES...goodness me!! Tasty! Shun's rice was awesome too! First time for me to eat the chirashizushi during our Christmas parties.

Katie and Kina. Their younger sister, Kimby, was also dressed up like this too. So cute!

And...family photos.

Us with Uncle Isamu!

Yay! I wish everyone a super wonderful Christmas and New Years!!! Can't want to see your Christmas posts and family photos.

Hat Show

Last week I pulled out his size 70 clothes. I found a stack of hats, so I had a little fun. Some hats are still too big, but tried them on him anyway.

Hair Cut!

I woke up yesterday morning and after taking one look at Boobins I decided, "I'm going to cut his hair today!"
So, I sat him in his walker and turned on his favorite video, Baby Einstein. And as he watched his video, I watched his baby hair fall to the floor. Aww...a part of me wanted to shout, "Noooo!! Stop!!" But, thank God I cut it! He looks soooo much cuter and fatter!

Some people say he looks more like Leika's boys now, others say he looks totally Japanese now, and some say he looks like Hik and Angel's boys. So...although he's cuter, he looks less like me. Ha! Darnit!

Is Crying it Out Dangerous for Kids?

Is crying it out hurting your child?

Is crying it out hurting your child?

If the link between parent and child is strong enough that kids can "catch" their parents' stress, it may stand to reason that babies crave the physical connection that comes with a cuddle. It's something that plenty of parents are more than happy to provide during the day but, when it comes to bedtime, the modern emphasis has been on teaching good sleep habits -- and giving mom and dad a break.

Most sleep-deprived parents get to the point where they're willing to try almost anything in order to get a good night's rest. While some decry it as cruel, others have had success with the "cry it out" method -- teaching babies to "self-soothe" by letting their nighttime crying go unanswered.

But is "crying it out" about establishing independence? Or is it just a way of making those early years easier for parents?

In an article published this week in Psychology Today, one researcher says that crying it out could be dangerous for children, leading to a lifetime of harm.

"A crying baby in our ancestral environment would have signaled predators to tasty morsels," writes Darcia Narvaez, an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Collaborative for Ethical Education at the University of Notre Dame. "So our evolved parenting practices alleviated baby distress and precluded crying except in emergencies."

When babies are stressed, their bodies release the hormone cortisol, which can damage or even destroy neurons in their still-developing brains, researchers at Yale University and Harvard Medical School have found. That can lead to a higher incidence of ADHD, poor academic performance, and anti-social tendencies.

Human babies are hardwired for near-constant holding, breastfeeding, and having their other needs met quickly -- the hallmarks of Attachment Parenting, Narvaez points out -- in order for their brains to develop properly. Even Dr. Richard Ferber, whose sleep-training method is commonly called the Cry It Out Method, says that he never intended parents to completely ignore their babies nighttime tears.

"I've always believed that there are many solutions to sleep problems, and that every family and every child is unique," he said in an interview with BabyTalk. "People want one easy solution, but there's no such thing. I never encouraged parents to let their babies cry it out, but one of the many treatment styles I described in my book is gradual extinction, where you delay your response time to your baby's wakings. I went to great pains in the second edition to clarify that that treatment is not appropriate for every sleep issue, of which there are many."

What he does encourage is teaching children to soothe themselves during normal nighttime wakings. But many parents extend his advice to include all bedtime-related crying. That's the type of crying it out sets kids up for stress-related problems, trust issues, anxiety disorders, reduced brain function, and a lack of independence, Narvaez writes. And since the problems are on a genetic level, they can't necessarily be fixed later in life.

"In studies of rats with high or low nurturing mothers, there is a critical period for turning on genes that control anxiety for the rest of life," Narvaez writes. "If in the first 10 days of life you have low nurturing rat mother (the equivalent of the first 6 months of life in a human), the gene never gets turned on and the rat is anxious towards new situations for the rest of its life, unless drugs are administered to alleviate the anxiety."

Could a lack of nurturing explain our "Prozac Nation?" Narvaez points out that she's witnessed the long-term physical effects of it firsthand.

"I was raised in a middle-class family with a depressed mother, harsh father and overall emotionally unsupportive environment -- not unlike others raised in the USA," she writes. "I have only recently realized from extensive reading about the effects of early parenting on body and brain development that I show the signs of undercare -- poor memory (cortisol released during distress harms hippocampus development), irritable bowel and other poor vagal tone issues, and high social anxiety."

The lack of nurturing, and the prevalence of parents who put their own needs in front of their kids', may be to blame for the mental and physical health problems that are plaguing the United States now.

"If we want a strong country and people," she writes, "we've got to pay attention to what children need for optimal development."

My Whereabouts

Caption: Boobins with Aunty Sherry

Hey there,
I just wanted to post something quick to let you know my whereabouts, and to reasure you that I'm still alive!

Josh went to driving school on November 20th, for a little over two weeks. So in the mean time, I stayed at Sam and Leika's then moved on to stay at my parents house for 11 days.

Now I'm back home and am busy with Christmas planning and organizing. :) But I am taking care to photograph my son during this season, so...hang in there. I'll have photos posted of my visits soon. :)

Love you!

Teething

I thought my baby was teething before, now I'm most certain that he is.

He recently started waking up in the middle of the night almost every several minutes to cry a painful cry. Nursing him or soothing him lying down doesn't work so I have to get up all the way to rock and hold him real tight and he falls right to sleep as if he's been sleeping all along. Then when I try lying down again he gets cranky and upset. Frustrating!!

I was certain he'd be tired the next day, but nope, he's his happy self in the morning.
In the day he's sticking everything in his mouth, gnawing at everything so intensely, pulling at his ear or touching his jaws, caughing, and drooling. All symptoms of teething...oh boy!

I'm staying at Sam & Leika's for a week while Josh is away at driving school and then I thought to visit my parents for a few days. Uh oh...I may be bringing with me a night time monster!

I didn't know teething pains went straight into the night as well. Mothers what did you experience when your baby(ies) were teething? What soothed them? Was there anything you did that worsened the situation?? (Like being in a different place?)

Need to hear some real live experiences.

Meg posted this photo on her blog, and because we had the same toy I thought I'd be fun to try copying it for...well...Bri-Ty-friendship memories...whatever that means! Ha!

Let Me Tell You A Story

Two great stories I read recently that are just so sweet to keep to myself.

Let Me Tell You A Story
by Tony Campolo

The first party occurred spontaneously when Tony Campolo was on missionary business in Haiti. As he approached the entrance of his hotel, he was intercepted by three young teen girls.

The one in the middle said, “Mister, for ten dollars you can have me all night long.” He was stunned by what she had said. He turned to the girl next to her and asked, “Can I have you for ten dollars, too?” She nodded approval. He asked the third girl the same question and got the same response.

“Fine! I’ve got thirty dollars! I’m in Room 210. You be up there in a half hour. I’ll pay you then and I want all three of you for the whole night!

Rushing up to his room, he wasted no time getting on the phone and calling the concierge. “Could you please send every Walt Disney cartoon video you have up to Room 210.”

Next, the restaurant. His order? “Banana splits! Huge—with extra everything! Extra whipped cream, extra chocolate syrup, extra nuts. Four of them, please!”

Within the half hour the videos came, the three girls came, and the banana splits came. The girls sat on the edge of the bed devouring the banana splits and thoroughly enjoying video after video until about one in the morning when the last of them fell asleep. It was probably the nicest party they had ever had—and maybe the only one!

As Tony sat there looking at their small bodies strewn across the bed, he thought, “Nothing’s changed. Tomorrow they will be back on the streets. Tomorrow they will be selling their bodies for ten dollars a throw, because there will always be rotten, ugly men who will destroy the dignity of little girls for ten dollars a night.”

Then the Spirit spoke to him and said, “But, for one night, Tony, you let them be little girls again. For one night, you let them be kids. You didn’t change their lives, but for one night you gave them back their childhoods.”

SECOND PARTY

The next party Tony related took place in Hawaii. He had arrived in Honolulu late at night, ravenously hungry. At 3:30 in the morning, everything was closed except a side street cafĂ©—“one of those sleazy places that deserves the name ‘greasy spoon.’” Not wanting to touch the filthy menu, he ordered a cup of coffee and a donut.

The solitude of the early morning was broken as the door of the diner swung open, and, much to his discomfort, in marched eight or nine provocatively dressed and boisterous prostitutes.

It was a small place and their talk was loud and crude. Feeling completely out of place and just about to make his getaway, he was suddenly stopped in his tracks when he overheard the woman sitting beside him say, “Tomorrow’s my birthday. I’m going to be thirty-nine.”

Her “friend” responded in a nasty tone, “So what do you want from me? A birthday party? What do you want? Ya want me to get you a cake and sing ‘Happy Birthday’?”

“Come on!” said the woman sitting next to Tony. “Why do you have to be so mean? I was just telling you, that’s all. Why do you have to put me down? I don’t want anything from you. I mean, why should you give me a birthday party? I’ve never had a birthday party in my whole life. Why should I have one now?”

That conversation changed Tony’s plans. Waiting until the women were gone, he inquired of the man behind the counter whether the women came in every night.

“Yeah!” he answered.

“The one that was sitting right next to me, does she come here every night?”

“Yeah!” he said. “That’s Agnes. Yeah, she comes in here every night. Why d’ya wanna know?”

“Because I heard her say that tomorrow is her birthday. What do you think about us throwing a birthday party for her—right here—tomorrow night?”

A smile slowly crossed the owner’s chubby face and he answered enthusiastically. “That’s great! I like it! That’s a great idea!” “Hey! Come out here!” he shouted to his wife, who was cooking in the back room. “This guy’s got a great idea. Tomorrow’s Agnes’s birthday. This guy wants us to go in with him and throw a birthday party for her right here tomorrow night!”

His wife, obviously happy about the idea, exclaimed, “That’s wonderful! You know Agnes is one of those people who is really nice and kind, but nobody ever does anything nice for her!”

“Look,” I told them, “if it’s okay with you, I’ll get back here tomorrow morning about 2:30 and decorate the place. I’ll even get a birthday cake!”

“No way,” said Harry. “The birthday cake’s my thing. I’ll make the cake.”

At 2:30 the next morning Tony was back at the diner. He had picked up some crepe paper decorations at the store and had made a sign out of big pieces of cardboard that read, “Happy Birthday, Agnes!” When the diner was decorated from one end to the other, it really looked good.

Word must have gotten out, because by 3:15 it seemed like every prostitute in Honolulu was in the place. It was wall-to-wall prostitutes … and Tony!

At 3:30 on the dot, the door of the diner swung open and in came Agnes and her friend. Tony had everybody ready. “Happy Birthday!” they all screamed in unison!

Never had anyone been so flabbergasted … so stunned … so shaken. Her mouth fell open. Her legs seemed to buckle a bit. Her friend grabbed her arm to steady her. As she was led to one of the stools along the counter, everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her. The fight to hold herself together was lost when the birthday cake with all the candles was carried out, and Agnes broke down in huge sobs. Finally composing herself, she looked down at the cake and slowly and softly said, “Look, Harry, is it all right with you if I … I mean is it okay if I kind of … what I want to ask you is … is it okay if I keep the cake a little while? I mean is it all right if we don’t eat it right away?”

Harry shrugged and answered, “Sure! It’s okay. If you want to keep the cake, keep the cake. Take it home if you want to.”

“Can I?” she asked. Then looking at Tony she said, “I live just down the street a couple of doors. I want to take the cake home and show it to my mother, okay? I’ll be right back. Honest!”

Getting off the stool and picking up the cake like it was life’s dearest treasure, she walked slowly toward the door. As they all stood there motionless, she left.

When the door closed, there was a stunned silence in the place. Not knowing what else to do, Tony broke the silence by saying, “What do you say we pray?”

Tony prayed for Agnes. He prayed for her salvation. He prayed that her life would be changed and that God would be good to her. He prayed for the salvation of the others. When he finished, Harry leaned over the counter, and said, “Hey! You never told me you were a preacher. What kind of church do you belong to?”

In one of those moments when just the right words came, he answered, “I belong to a church that throws birthday parties for whores at 3:30 in the morning.”

Harry paused a moment, then he answered, “No you don’t. There’s no church like that. If there was, I’d join it. I’d join a church like that!”

Tony summed up his story this way. “Wouldn’t we all? Wouldn’t we all love to join a church that throws birthday parties for whores at 3:30 in the morning? Well, that’s the kind of church Jesus came to create. He doesn’t know where we got the other one that’s so prim and proper. But anybody who reads the New Testament will discover a Jesus who loved to party with whores and with all kinds of left-out people. The publicans and sinners loved Him because He partied with them. The lepers of society found in Him someone who would eat and drink with them. And while the solemnly pious could not relate to what He was about, those lonely people who usually didn’t get invited to parties took to Him with excitement: Our Jesus was and is the Lord of the party.”

Tony added as an afterthought, “Now it seems more than strange for a sociologist to be leading a prayer meeting with a bunch of prostitutes in a diner in Honolulu at three-thirty in the morning. But then it just felt like the right thing to do.”

Toys toys toys

My recent hobby has been shopping at second-hand stores buying fun things for Brian. You can always find good deals at second-hand stores, and I get so excited when I buy something. Of course, there are certain things that you definitely want to buy brand new. Heh heh...

Josh got me thinking about getting these spunge mats. Usually one piece is 100 yen. And if there's a picture on it like these ones do, then it costs more. This mat is like a puzzle. The animal pieces come out too. I found 12 pieces for 400 yen. :) Yay! Tanoshii!!

I'm soooo bored these days, I found myself pulling out animal toys and ORGANIZING THEM. So crazy. Haha! I caught myself and had to back away. Haha.
All these animals and dinos (there are more of these) were in a big bag for 300 yen. Yay!

These toys are a little advanced for Brian, but he really gets in there and grabs them. I do animal flash cards with him, and so he's familiar with animal sounds. When he picks up an animal I make the sound the animal makes and he just loves it.

He can sit for just a few seconds. He's not THAT strong just yet. I let go of him for these photos. :)

Mister Job

The Story of Mister Job

Mister Job who sat in his mount of sadness...chewing away at what little he had.

He then lost it all.
Struggling to retrieve what was lost, he found that he couldn't.

Sadness...complaining... Still in the process of learning to be postive and content.

Ahh, at last. God gave him back two fold!! Equal to, TWO whole fingers! Job was happy again.

Meg, Motozo, & Ty visit Tateyama

Motozo, Meg, and Ty, came to visit us on the 19th of this month. It was great fun! Thank you Meg and Motozo for driving all the way out here to visit us.
It was so good to see Ty again and it was so much fun to see the changes. Babies grow up so fast! It's amazing. Ty and Brian were pretty much the same weight and hight this time. Ty is growing up even faster than Brian!!

They arrived in Tateyama mid day. Meg called me for directions and when I asked, "Where are you now?? What's around you??" and Meg answered honestly, "Hmm...nothing, grass, fields..." Hahaha!! (Jan's thoughts: "Hmm...where could she beeee.....")
I had to pass the phone to Josh and I have no idea what he said...but he helped them get to our house safely. :)

We had lunch together in our disasterous house that's being reformed now, and Ty started talking and making all these noises. Brian just sat there staring at Ty. It was soo cute.

In this photo Motozo was trying to get Ty to say more to Brian.
Motozo: Ty, what did you say to Brian? What did you say?

LOOK AT THEIR BODIES!! TY IS SOOO TALL!!! He really looks like a little baby though. He's so cute. His eyes are still my favorite to look at. He's got this really sweet tender look. Brian, while also sweet and tender, is also very curious and constantly on the look out for some more action somewhere.

Yes..caught them both looking at me!

Brian caught a hold of Ty's hood, and started pulling him in every direction! Ha!

Ty, didn't like that too much.

Holding hands.

Ty studying Brian, or maybe checking out the suspicious character next to him.

I didn't take too many photos while out at the beach. This is the only one I got of beautiful Meg...and muscular Motozo. Both are caught off guard, but still lookin' good.

My two favorite boys.

Ty, 3 months. Brian, 4 months. Same size. Let's see how they are next time we meet!
Josh and I really enjoyed the two evenings where we ate dinner together and just chatted about different things. Tanoshikatta desu! We will be looking forward to the next time you visit (or we visit).
