Teething

I thought my baby was teething before, now I'm most certain that he is.

He recently started waking up in the middle of the night almost every several minutes to cry a painful cry. Nursing him or soothing him lying down doesn't work so I have to get up all the way to rock and hold him real tight and he falls right to sleep as if he's been sleeping all along. Then when I try lying down again he gets cranky and upset. Frustrating!!

I was certain he'd be tired the next day, but nope, he's his happy self in the morning.
In the day he's sticking everything in his mouth, gnawing at everything so intensely, pulling at his ear or touching his jaws, caughing, and drooling. All symptoms of teething...oh boy!

I'm staying at Sam & Leika's for a week while Josh is away at driving school and then I thought to visit my parents for a few days. Uh oh...I may be bringing with me a night time monster!

I didn't know teething pains went straight into the night as well. Mothers what did you experience when your baby(ies) were teething? What soothed them? Was there anything you did that worsened the situation?? (Like being in a different place?)

Need to hear some real live experiences.

  1. poor little bugger :( and poor you too haha, I'm experiencing smililar with her molars coming in now. I try giving her a whole body massage to release the tension, also hot baths before bed but otherwise it's quite nasty for a few days, then subsides, it might be a bit tough changing environment at this time, but I think support from family and friends are also nice so it's a win either way :D

Do you have one of those chewing rings? They don't really help much but maybe?? Also I let amelie chew on a pacifier (she never used it for the correct purpose)..he also might have an earache if he's tugging on ear etc, so watch out for that one.

  2. aww, poor guy. I was so lucky, all 3 teethed pretty near 1 yrs old when they already experienced bumps, cuts, and pain so some more in the mouth wasn`t all that bad. They did usually get colds though, so I just did what I always do when they were sick; hold them and try to make them as comfortable as possible.
I hear ice-cream or cold things help with the pain but it`s winter... Natie would actually hold her mouth open (mind you she was 1 and 2 months) while I pinched and rubbed her gum, she really liked it. It`s actually more likely she`ll get an infection from having my fingers in her mouth, but she loved it and it was sorta funny.
I think "being in a different place" or new situations while baby/child is going through other changes makes it worse, kinda like that feeling of, "I just wanna go home!" but it`s not necessarily a bad thing. It`s a good learning experience for him, he`ll realize no matter where he is he can trust you to be there for him.
Good to hear Josh is getting his license. We`ll try to come visit for Dec.

  4. Teething is nasty, better or worse depending on the child. Not comforting, but there is really nothing you can do to ease the pain, there are things you can do to sooth .. but its only momentarily, hence the frustrating nights. Sam was easy with her 1st teeth, the later ones that came in around one was horrible! And I think being in a new place really did make her more grumpy, but she was one by then and understood where her home was. Around 7 months we went to the states on vacation, traveled around, she started teething then but was totally happy!
In my experience with my 2nd one, try not to expect happiness from him for a while. Search up some links on what to do to sooth teething, you will find lots of tips out there. Sounds like he is happy in the day, which is good. In which case get as much rest as you can (if you have someone to help watch him) nap when he naps. All those things, to give you energy for the night battle. At one point I even let my baby sleep on me, I just sat on the couch with a bunch of cushions around to make it comfy, not the best but that way we both slept some (and get this she still has no teeth, but the teething signs have all stopped .. so weird ..)

  5. Waaaaaaaaaaa Seiko Riley still doesn't have teeth?Papoosie's been 'teething' for like 2 months straight now! For a week straight he didn't sleep at night unless he was held (I was too sick to hold him through it so Grandma was the hero) Thankfully he's been sleeping better these days ... he loves chewing carrots and apples and will actually chew dents into them ... I also put his teethers in the fridge ... he seems to like them cold ... other than that I (or dad or grandma) basically just have to hold him when he starts screaming from pain (somehow the cry is different) ... and still after two months of all this he still has no teeth ... hehehehe

  6. Out of my 3, Kimby was the only one who had a problem with teething, but she was almost 2 and she would wake up screaming for an hour each night. we'd just hold her and rock her, and that was it. But that only lasted a week or so. Never had any other problems. Did you try the teething gel? (Did I give that to you?) That might work. I think soothing may be the only thing and best thing you could do..it won't last forever :)(haha, if I were you I'd be dying) Brian is sooo good all the time, tho', seriously.
